The Program

Eight Weeks.
Real Work.

SAKALA Summer 2026 is an eight-week paid apprenticeship at Konkret’s Grand Bassin site in Milot, Nord. Fifteen youth ages 14-20 work alongside experienced mentors, earn a direct stipend, and become cooperative members from Day 1 — not beneficiaries, not students. Members.

Dan Tillias and the Konkret team have been building cooperative enterprise in Nord for over 20 years. BARSS brings the economic framework and diaspora mobilization. Together, this summer is the first installment of a long-term cooperative that will outlast the summer.

What You Learn

Apprenticeship Tracks

Youth are placed across all operations of the cooperative. Each track teaches the practical skill and the economic logic behind it.

01
Agronomy & Soil Science
Soil testing, crop selection, seasonal planning. Reading the land before planting it.
02
Nursery Management
Propagation, hardening, transplant timing. The nursery is where profitability starts.
03
Harvest & Post-Harvest
Timing, handling, storage, loss prevention. Most value is lost after harvest — this track stops that.
04
Cooperative Finance
Ledgers, surplus distribution, member equity. Every youth learns to read the books.
05
Civic Leadership
Community organizing, conflict resolution, collective decision-making.
06
Agricultural Marketing
Pricing, buyer relationships, market access. How to sell what you grow at full value.
07
Environmental Stewardship
Water management, erosion control, agroforestry. Building land that lasts generations.
08
Food Processing
Value addition, preservation, packaging. Turning raw output into higher-margin product.

The Youth

Their Stories

Nadia
Nadia, 16
Nursery Management

At 16, Nadia runs the seedling section with more precision than most adults. She has been asking to lead the cooperative’s record-keeping since week two.

Junior
Junior, 18
Agronomy

Junior came with no farming background. Eight weeks in, he can read a soil test and explain why Grand Bassin supports moringa and okra better than the valley floor.

Lovely
Lovely, 17
Agricultural Marketing

Lovely negotiated the cooperative’s first direct buyer relationship at the Cap-Haïtien market. She is 17.

Renaldo
Renaldo, 19
Environmental Stewardship

Renaldo designed the site’s water retention system after seeing erosion hit a neighbor’s plot. His design is now part of the permanent farm plan.
