The SAKALA Haiti cooperative, since 2019
Founded in 2019 in Dubre, Milot, KONKRÈT, the SAKALA Haiti cooperative, was born from a simple but bold dream: to use the land to create work and unlock the potential of Haitian youth.
Faced with the limits of traditional humanitarian aid, we chose to bet on agricultural entrepreneurship, hands-on training, and local cooperation to build a model of lasting impact.
Outside aid could not create self-reliance. Only a model rooted in local resources, led by Haitians for Haitians, could bring about change that lasts beyond the next funding cycle.
We believe agriculture can be an engine of economic transformation when it is collective, cooperative, and built around youth employment.
KONKRET -- Founding philosophy
SAKALA is founded in Cité Soleil. More than twenty years of work with Haitian youth begin, rooted in the land and the community.
SAKALA's first land-and-youth pilot takes shape in Milot, with out-of-school youth from Dubre and the surrounding area. A bet on the land and on the next generation.
The first agricultural partnerships roll out as a cooperative network. The logic of sharing and collective ownership starts to take real shape.
A field director is hired in the Greater North. SAKALA begins to institutionalize its model and build a permanent presence in the region.
Expansion to Trou-du-Nord and Limonade. The Milot model proves it can be replicated. Two new areas of work, a regional network in the making.
KONKRET is created as SAKALA's youth-employment cooperative, and the youth job-creation school Makonn Travay launches. Daniel Tillias, founding director, is named a CNN Heroes 2019 nominee ... international recognition of the Haitian model.
SAKALA Haiti launches the Grand Bassin (Milot) agricultural program in partnership with BARSS. Large-scale cooperative farming, the first phase of a pilot model aimed at 50,000 electrical connections.
SAKALA Summer 2026 ... Grand Bassin, 21 acres, 8 weeks. The culmination of KONKRET's cooperative model, funded by the Haitian diaspora -- who can hire a young person directly.
A job for every young person. Land put to work. A partnership that matters.
Today, KONKRET means ...
Because we are rooted in our community, because every action is KONKRÈT, and because we believe that together we can sow hope and harvest a new Haïti.
